I just read a post where a girl said she didn’t care what people thought of her. She was on her path and just being herself. I actually care what people think of me. I realize this is a bit morbid but I wonder, what if I were to die tomorrow? What would people say about me at my funeral? They won’t talk about my business; my failures and my successes; my yo-yo dieting; my love life; or my wardrobe. They’ll jest that I love to Snoopy Dance in random spots and can’t stay awake past 9pm (even in a restaurant.) They will talk about the person I aspired to be- reliable, honest, kind, open. Hopefully, friends and maybe even acquaintances will say that though their time with me was brief, they found me to be inspirational, motivational, supportive and positive. Wow, if this isn’t what people think of me, then I’ve just set another goal for myself-to live with purpose and do GOOD. What do you think people say about you?

Ever go to coffee and the cashier asks you if you’d like to buy a charity star or dove for $1 or $5? Well, my rule is if I’m in line and someone is beside me, then I always say yes. Even if I go everyday and have given each time, I still buy one.

I don’t think it’s right for the person next to me to hear “No.” If I say “yes” then they may buy one too. If they hear “no’ they may think it’s okay not to be charitable.

When they hear my YES and then they choose not to contribute then that action is solely theirs.

Pay attention to who is around you. You don’t want to be the one that let’s them off the hook from doing the right thing.

Catching up with old friends is one of my most favorite things to do. You throw out the “hi, how are you?” expecting “great and you?” But the response is unexpected and the conversation isn’t light. “Mom is dying in hospice.” “We’re getting a divorce.” “I can’t find a job after all these months.”
Wow, what do you say? Actually, you don’t have to say anything. You simply just have to be present and listen. It’s the best gift you can give and the most appreciated.
I was just chatting on Facebook and “listening” to my friend’s issues. Of course, I tried to point out the light in the darkness, as I always look for the good in everything.

GOOD is all around

A few days ago I wrote about tweeting a good thing that happens to me before I go to sleep. So now I’m spend the day looking for good things to write about at the end of the day. Not only I’m I super aware of good but I’ve found by the end of the day, I have more than one thing to write about. Calls from old friends, witnessing a blind man being assisted across the street, giving directions to Rodeo Dr to a tourist, playing hooky from work to lunch with a friend, reading GOOD tweets.

It only took a couple of days for me to change from going through the motions to being aware of everything around me. I invite you to try this. Write down or even post a GOOD thing that happens to you just before bedtime. Let me know if you too are experiencing the same thing I am.

I’ve been up since 5:30am. Have already walked to coffee with my best friend, played with my dog, cleaned the kitchen cabinet, chatted with friends, replied to emails and have blogged! It’s not even 9am and I’ve already had a fantastic day!

I live in Toronto, and am working a contract in Vancouver for a few months. The first thing I noticed being here, in Vangroovy as a friend of mine likes to call it, was that almost everybody thanks the bus driver when the get off. Though it struck me as being very odd at first, I have, without really noticing, that I am now doing the same thing. And most of the time, depending on the driver, you get a really nice response back. It feels good.

Putting good out into the universe

I recently came across a journal from when I was 15. Filled with the usual teen angst- Who will I hang out with this weekend? Does he like me? Maybe I’ll be pretty if I lose 10lbs. Well, 26 years later I find myself challenged by those same issues. Must say, didn’t make me feel good to look back on my life and discover that I haven’t evolved.

Now, I’m not saying we shouldn’t write. I am pro-journal keeping. I think we should document our experiences and thoughts. Entries don’t have to be essays. They just have to be a few words or sentences to remind us of the day.

Whenever I go to a museum I always purchase the show catalog. I write the date and a small note on the first page. If I’m with a friend, I ask them to write. It can be as simple as “I didn’t understand why that was art” to “brrr…freezing out today and the perfect excuse to duck into the museum for a tour and a cocoa.”

Makes me smile each time I flip through those books.

I had an idea at holiday time this year that I should start a journal. However, I didn’t want it to have any negativity in it. I thought if I could write down one positive thing that happened to me that day that when I looked back at it, I would see that my life was filled with goodness.

So, it is now January 17th and I haven’t written down one thing.

Yesterday I had an epiphany.

My cousin Paula had tweeted a story about how I helped my employee at Xmas. So many people wrote to me saying that they were touched by my good deed and that it made them cry, smile, renew their faith in people, and want to share the story.

So, I’ve decided that I’m going to tweet before bed the one GOOD thing that happened to me during the day. Imagine going to sleep and the last thought in your head is a positive one.

In the morning, people will wake up and check their accounts and read about something good. What a great way to start off the day! Imagine if a few people like my idea and they tweet their one GOOD thing that happened- like holding the door open for someone, letting the person behind you in line go ahead of you, calling Grandma, receiving a hand-written letter, having the money to pay the bills, bumping into an old friend, strolling on the beach and seeing dolphins swimming, getting into the skinny jeans, finishing a book. So, now I’m putting GOOD out into the universe and others could put GOOD out into the universe and then we would be reaching out to thousands to share the happiness!

We go to bed with GOOD in our heads and wake up to GOOD thoughts. Perhaps if we’re more aware of all the GOOD in our lives, then we’ll be more appreciative of how GOOD our lives are and thus grateful and happy.

So, today is 80 degrees in LA and I walked to coffee with my best friend. What GOOD did you experience today?
